Access: 75 km south down SH1 then 5H25. Turn left at Mangatangi hamlet and the walkway entrance is marked by a small blue sign and a stile 7 km down the Kaiaua Rd, beside a farm gate.

 

Length: 6 km — 5 hours return

 

Footwear: Boots

 

Caveat: Closed for lambing 1 August — 1 October.

 

The route is marked with orange bollards and follows a fenceline across paddocks, then crosses a stony stream, and follows a farmer’s airstrip to an open paddock, before entering the steep hills of the Vining Scenic Reserve,  460 hectares of mainly virgin bush. The track follows a razorback ridge through open forest including kanuka, puriri, beech and kauri, before joining the ARC Ring Track on the main ridge. Turn right to reach the grassed summit at Mangatangi trig and panoramic views.
