Great Barrier Island

Access: Ferry leaves Auckland Downtown Terminal Tuesday Thursday and Sunday at 9 am for 3.5 hour trip to Port Fitzroy, Great Barrier Island — more frequently during summer season. Bus or taxi to Okiwi.

Length: 9.5 kms —4 hours

Footwear/Clothing: Walking shoes — boots preferable in winter. Warm clothing as route is exposed.

Caveat: Crosses private land at the Okiwi end, and walkers should keep to the track. No camping on track.

The walkway begins as the Fitzroy-Harataonga Road leaves Okiwi Plain. It follows the old bridle route on an easy gradient south sticking roughly to the 100 metre contour line above the coast. Views include Rakitu (Arid) Island close offshore, bays, inlets and fishing gannets. Kaka, the New Zealand parrot, may be heard or seen. The track passes mainly through regenerating scrub and ends at the camping ground at Harataonga where showers, toilets and water are available. Transport from isolated Harataonga needs to be arranged.
