Access: 70 km from Auckland. SH 1 to Dairy Flat.

Turn left to Kaukapakapa. Join Kaipara Coast Highway just beyond the town, then 23 km to the Glorit-Kaipara Hills Road, turn right and entrance to the track is sign-posted 3 km in. This is the gentler ascent to the Mt Auckland summit. Alternative ascent is signposted from Kaipara Coast Highway, 2 km past the Glorit-Kaipara Rd turnoff.

Length: 8 km - 3.5 hours

Footwear: Walking shoes or boots

Caveat: Kaipara Coast Highway access to forest edge is closed 1 August - 30 September for lambing. Crosses land sacred to local iwi - walkers should keep to track

From the Kaipara Hills Rd entrance the track follows an airstrip and logging track along the ridge to the Atuanui forest -native bush milled of its hardwoods but with fine stands of regenerating rimu and kauri. The walkway follows a narrow ridge with three side-tracks to view mature kauri. The Mt Auckland summit is 300m with a lookout tower to preserve panoramic views in all directions. Walkers can turn back here or take the track westward to the Kaipara Coast Rd exit, a steep descent.
