Access: 35-minute ferry trip from the Ferry Buildings, Downtown Auckland, to Waiheke Island. Ferries leave every two hours from 8am. Waiheke Island Shuttle Co. bus takes you to Man 0 War Bay station gate and earth mound.

  

Length: From earth mound to Stony Batter Reserve 3 km, 2.5 hours return. Stony Batter north to Hooks

Bay 2 km, 1 hour return. Stony Batter south to Opopo Bay 2.5 km, 2 hours return.

 

Footwear/Equipment: Walking shoes. A torch is necessary for tunnels.

  

Caveat: The walkway easement crosses private land —please stay clear of farm sheds. Closed for lambing 1 August — 1 October.

 

The road from the earth mound is marked with orange reflectors. At the intersection 2 km in, the route veers right up the hill, leading onto Stony Batter — so-called for its strewn andesitic boulders. The Stony Batter Historic Reserve has World War II gun emplacements and connecting tunnels. Those wishing to continue the walk can continue south to Opopo Bay on a track which leads off from the gun emplacements, or continue straight ahead, past a gate, where the track leads on to Hooks Bay
